2001 Historic Preservation Success Stories!
 If
a historic building can no longer function as it was originally intended,
the next best things is to rehabilitate it for another use. This is exactly
what occurred with the Beulah Public School at 205 2nd Street NW in Beulah,
ND. Begun in 1919 and completed in 1920, the Beulah Public School was closed in 1996 when a new facility was built. On September 30, 1997, the historic school was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The rehabilitation of the building into apartments by MetroPlains Development Inc. of St. Paul, MN, followed the listing. The company used the federal historic rehabilitation tax credit program in the nearly $2 million rehabilitation. Other recently rehabilitated school buildings were the North A and North B buildings at the Grafton State School at a cost of nearly $4 million, and South Junior High School in Grand Forks for $3.6 million. MetroPlains Development Inc., a National Honor Award winner for preservation, was also the developer for these school projects and used the federal tax incentive program.
