Susan's colorful, functional pottery is safe for the microwave, dishwasher and oven. None of her pottery contains any lead. Antique Bed or Foot Warmer
A special thanks to one of PND's great friends, Nancy Riddle Iverson, for this unique donation to this year's Auction! This unusual antique could be filled with hot water to heat up your feet, or be put under your blanket to heat up your bed. According to our donor, a cup of hot chocolate or a latte could also be kept warm by being placed in the "cup-holding space" on the top of this warmer! What a "way cool" addition to our Auction! Retail Value: $120 Donated by Nancy Riddle Iverson, Salinas, California
Monument Point Photograph
One of PND's guest presenters during its annual Conference, Dan Smith of Rolette, donated this great photograph to our auction. Our photograph of his photograph does not do this picture justice since the detail of the water levels on the Great Salt Lake in Utah is really incredible. Dan moved back to the Rugby area several years ago after living in the western part of the United States. Donated by Dan Smith, Dan Smith Photography, Rolette, ND
"Prairie Earth, Prairie Homes -- A Field School"
"Prairie Earth, Prairie Homes" is a field school that celebrates, investigates, and encourages the preservation of buildings built of earth on the Northern Plains. This Auction donation is for one Field School Experiential Learning Registration for a non-student participant. Too often considered a temporary expedient of pioneer times, earth buildings are an environmental response and a cultural signature of the people of the plains, fixtures in the prairie way of life. As we come to understand them, we are better able to preserve the buildings themselves and the lifeways that invest them. Restoring and preserving earth buildings in a region of continental climate offers challenges both technical and logistical, but those challenges can be met. In this field school, offered by North Dakota State University, we learn how. The Field School will be held from July 11 - 18, 2010, at the Hutmacher Farmstead in Dunn County. Retail Value: $200; meals and lodging are extra expenses for the registrant Donated by Dr. Suzzanne Kelley, NDSU's Field School Coordinator and Co-Instructor, and Preservation North Dakota (PND) http://historyrfd.net/isern/earth/ http://www.prairieplaces.org
"Candles at Canaan: Signs of Life in a Lonesome Land"
"Candles at Canaan: Signs of Life in a Lonesome Land" With essays entitled Lutefisk & Meatballs, Can Pile, Turkey and Kraut, Chubaracka and Smelt Fry (plus 19 more!), you know "Candles at Canaan" is a great collection of stories, tall tales and reminiscences about rural life in North Dakota. This 2-CD Audio Set features regionalist essays penned by Dr. Tom Isern, a University Distinguished Professor of History at NDSU who is also a folklorist and "Plains Folk" columnist for Prairie Public Radio. Dr. Isern is also the author or co-author of six books about life on the plains. The title essay of the set is a sketch about the Christmas Eve service at the Canaan Church. "Like all the 24 essays in the set," noted Dr. Isern, "this one has a message of hope - hope about living a good life on the prairies." Retail Value: $20 for each of TWO Audio Sets in the Auction Donated by Dr. Tom Isern, NDSU Department of History, Fargo, ND http://library.ndsu.edu/grhc/order/tapes/candlesatcanaan.html
"Dakota Circle"
"Dakota Circle" is a wry, sometimes humorous, always insightful description of the people and things that make up the Great Plains. From the odd something in Absaraka, North Dakota, to Montana Caviar, plum butter recipes and the large sculptures that dot its level landscapes, author Tom Isern lays before the reader enough significant slices of Plains life to make a whole pie. This book is a collection of essays and articles based on Isern's research and travels on the Northern Plains over the past two decades. Material in the work derives also from his weekly newspaper column, "Plains Folk," which is distributed by NDSU Extension and appears weekly and widely across the region. "Dakota Circle" concludes with the now-notorious "You Must be from North Dakota" list of regional virtues and idiosyncrasies . . . Retail Value: $20 Donated by Dr. Tom Isern, Distinguished Professor of History at NDSU, Fargo, ND http://www.ndsu.edu/ahss/ndirs/Dakota%20Circle.htm

"The Movement" by Perry Joe Little
This intricate black-and-white print was created by Perry Joe Little, an artist who is emerging as one of the finest representatives of his people, the Yankton Sioux of South Dakota. "The Movement" symbolizes the sad and depressing era in our history when many Native American people were forced to leave their land, their buffalo, their eagles, their customs, their traditions and their pride . . . and move to live on the reservations. The face of the Native American in this picture depicts the melancholy feeling that he has . . . since he has to give up all the freedoms that he has known to live in a different world. This signed, limited edition print is number 25 of 25; it is approximately 14" x 7." (Our picture does not do this print justice; it is beautiful!) Retail Value: $65 Donated by Gerri Dubourt of Shabby Chic, Walhalla, ND

Gueldner is about food and drink that has nourished and nurtured for centuries. And if too much time has gone by since you savored wholesome and delicious foods or just thought about those early times, this is the book for you." "Cookbook for Germans from Russia"
"Danke" to the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at NDSU for this great addition to PND's Silent Auction! Here are some thoughts about this great cookbook written by its author, Nelly Das: "Between 1763 and 1815, people from very different areas, notably Schwabia, Baden and Hesse, left their homelands to emigrate to distant reaches of Russia, but they took their culture along with them. Customs and traditions are certainly part of culture, but so are foodways, too. I would imagine that in those days there were few if any cookbooks, so that most women were, at best, left to collecting a series of handwritten recipes. In the colonist villages, recipes were passed on from mother to daughter. And today the Aussiedler are returning to their original country with recipes that have been handed down for 200 years . . . In cooking, you make use of whatever you have on hand!" Can't you just smell that "Red Borshch" cookin' in the kitchen!?!? "Gascoyne School in Winter"
Thanks to Mariah Masilko for this bittersweet but beautiful picture of the schoolhouse in rural Gascoyne. These words from Mariah's website describe her affection for our empty places and spaces on the prairie: "Growing up in North Dakota, I acquired a love for stormy skies, grass moving in the wind like ocean waves, lonesome trees, and old forgotten things that no longer have anyone to take care of them. I find beauty in abandoned structures - their loneliness; their desolation; their quiet melancholy; the way nature wraps herself around them and reclaims them as her own. I'm intrigued by the mystery of who lived in these places and when they left, and why." This matted photograph features an 8" x 10" photo with an 11" x 14" mat. "Fishing for Myth"
Heid Erdrich's book of poetry is divided into three sections: “Origin Stories,” “Mysteries of Faith” and “Systems of Divination.” In “Origin Stories,” Erdrich lays out the rich physical and cultural landscape of North Dakota. There is a focus on the struggles of adolescence and self-discovery. In “Mysteries of Faith,” the author artfully searches for truth in her own spirituality and portrays the difficulty in defining herself in terms of history and geography. And in “Systems of Divination,” the poetry illuminates the reconciliation of self within the constraints of the world and the landscape. The unifying threads in these three sections are Erdrich’s concise dissections of everyday circumstance, turning the commonplace of life into the mythology of something much greater. According to Kimberly M. Blaeser, the author of "Trailing You," Heid Erdrich poems "not only evoke with rich images the physical reality of places as unlike one another as Paris and the Dakota prairie, but they also demonstrate the bound nature of land, history, and people, and recreate in their reader an intense, almost frightening sense of the emotional and spiritual heartbeat of place.” Retail Value: $12.95 Donated by New Rivers Press of Moorhead, MN http://www.newriverspress.com
"The Dirty Shame Hotel"
Winner of the Minnesota Voices Project in 1998, "The Dirty Shame Hotel" captures, in short fiction, the multi-layered life experiences of people compelled to understand why they've made the American Midwest their home. Ron Block uses poetic language, vivid imagery and often unsettling, nearly magical situations to explore twentieth-century humanity in the Great Plains. An old typewriter becomes a divination device; bad deeds come back in physical forms; angels come to save us; and sometimes, a character can only understand her-or himself by wearing the skin of another. Block has lived in various parts of the Midwest, and in 1984 he moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where he taught English and film studies at North Dakota State University. Block’s poetry and stories have appeared in numerous magazines, such as North Dakota Quarterly, The Iowa Review, Epoch, Prairie Schooner, New Letters, Tamaqua, and Ploughshares. Retail Value: $14.95 Donated by the New Rivers Press of Moorhead, MN http://www.newriverspress.com
"Pilgrimage with Fish"
Ed Moses' dazzling memoir is to fishing what M. Scott Peck’s "Golf and the Spirit" is to golf. Moses, in a battered canoe with his son, shares stories like any good fishing guide about water, fish and fishermen, childhood in America, fathers and sons, life and death. It’s a pocket-sized meditation on the glories of being alive and doing what you love to do: In Ed Moses’ case, fishing with people you love. Whether practicing the art of catch-and-release fishing, conjuring up the past, or, with his elderly mother, taking his father’s ashes on one final river ride, Moses writes about what makes us human and how, for him, the passion of fishing keeps him from falling victim to the clockwork agenda of our times. Retail Value: $14.95 Donated by New Rivers Press of Moorhead, MN http://www.newriverspress.com
"Coming up for Light and Air"
"Coming Up for Light and Air" by Barbara Crow is a collection of lean, passionate poems wherein the writer — as mother, daughter, and wife — experiences transformation and rebirth by reconciling the distance between life and death, love and marriage, and a life lived in the southern and northern hemispheres. Many of the poems are elegies to the author's deceased son. As Madelyn Camrud (author of "This House is Filled with Cracks") has written: “A native of New Zealand, this North Dakota poet . . . moves through the death of her son and her mother by relying on things she knows and trusts.” Retail Value: $9.95 Donated by the New Rivers Press of Moorhead, MN http://www.newriverspress.com

"Thin Ice and Other Risks"
This latest addition to PND's Silent Auction features a series of short stories centered mainly on the Red River Valley and Alaska. Gary Eller's stories deal with main characters that have personality flaws and the effect that these flaws have on their lives. Several stories explore the theme of sexuality’s role and the consequences that can arise. The idea of commitment is also investigated to show that, often, sexuality and commitment come up as adversaries to one another and a characters’ happiness. With plots ranging from a man who is learning to skate, to an old English professor who attempts to deal with the repercussions from an affair twenty years in the past . . . these stories explore the different forms of regret that can occur from mistakes that people make. Retail Value: $9.95 Donated by New Rivers Press of Moorhead, MN http://www.newriverspress.com

A Night in a Woolly Wagon!
Ever spend a night in a "Wooly Wagon?" If not, you can . . . simply by being the highest bidder on this item in PND's Silent Auction! You can relive a part of this history by spending a night in the authentic shepherds wagon located at Custer's Cottage in Medora, ND. Twenty of North Dakota's chief executives have subsequently occupied the home. "Rural Columbus Schoolhouse"
The print is a 10 x 20 float-wrapped metallic laminated piece, frameless and ready to hang. Here is the information that Gail Mooney wrote about this print: "This image was captured two summers ago outside of Columbus, ND. We were there in Columbus to lay my mother to rest after a long and well-loved life. As we drove out to the countryside of our ancestor’s old stomping grounds, I was struck by how completely beautiful the scene was. From where we stood with her, you could see her girlhood home at the top of the hill to the east. It was here that her grandparents, after immigrating from Norway, homesteaded. And it was here that she was raised, with the farm being handed from one generation to the next. To the west, of this same hill we could see the old school house she’d attended – a little tattered and torn, but a beautiful testament all the same. The church she’d attended as a young person no longer stands, but the bell remains, as do the many spirits that loved, lived and prayed there. Where we stood, we realized, was a fine and beautiful tribute to her and all that she loved."
