Dr. Steven Bedford – Director, Historic Preservation/Building Conservation Program, University of Massachusetts-Amherst & Hancock Shaker Village
Dr. Bedford will discuss the issues of creating a new historic preservation program at what appears to be a critical time in the field. When many are feeling marginalized by a variety of seemingly uncontrollable events, how do we create a viable program that can help the profession? Dr. Bedford will discuss our motivation, our creation of curriculum, recruiting, funding and the unique collaboration among a university, a National Historic Landmark museum and a community.
12:00 pm Lunch
Choose from a variety of downtown eateries and explore historic downtown Dickinson.

1:00 to 4:00 pm Concurrent Sessions
1:00 pm Prairie Churches of North Dakota: The Stories They Tell
What can an investigation of one North Dakota county’s churches uncover? Quite a lot, actually! Inspired by the Prairie Churches of North Dakota project, Louise Burton used techniques such as observation, photography, measuring, drawing, research and analysis to document Walsh County churches and found a narrative worth preserving.

Burton, M.A. in History & Architecture, will share her suggestions for increasing the use of these buildings, thus increasing the odds of their survival.
1:00 pm Utilizing the Renaissance Zone Program to Revitalize Historic Downtowns
Danielle Stuckle will discuss how the Renaissance Zone can be utilized to spur investment in historic buildings.

Stuckle is the Director of the Dickinson Museum Center and serves as the Historic Preservationist for the City of Dickinson.

The session will also include information about recent and current projects involving the National Register around the state.

Meidinger is the Architectural Historian and National Register Coordinator for the State Historical Society of North Dakota in Bismarck.
3:00 pm Pearl Harbor: Creating a Context for the “Day of Infamy:” Developing a Story for the Pearl Lochs from 1780 to 1989
Contingent on Navy approval, Dr. Bedford will discuss issues relative to his recent research for the Navy and how he is creating two centuries of context for a site that is known primarily for the events of one day.
4:00 pm Documentation Through Photography
Every building has a story. Documenting what has been and what is will enable future generations to understand their history. A planned storage system, printing images that will last and a comprehensive calendar for archiving digital media is needed if the current generation of images is to be preserved for the future. Choosing the wrong materials guarantees we will lose what we have.

Join Dan Smith of Dan Smith Photography to learn about documentary photography using historic and modern processes and how to create and store photographic images.
4:00 pm Prairie Earth, Prairie Homes: The Field School Experience
In 2009, PND and North Dakota State University partnered to host the first ever Prairie Earth, Prairie Homes: A Field School. The Field School was offered for undergraduate or graduate college credits, professional development credits for teachers, and as a learning vacation. Participants studied earthen building techniques across western North Dakota, including studying and working at the Hutmacher Farm in Dunn County, PND’s current demonstration project.

Join Field School student Rob Kurtz, NDSU photographer Dan Koeck and journalist Joel Hagen as they relate their experiences participating in and documenting the inaugural field school session.
