Travel with Ben Kubischta along the road
formed by the Transportation Enhancement and Scenic Byway programs. You will
be taken on a journey around North Dakota exploring projects funded from
these programs. These are projects with stories that help build the foundation
of knowledge. This is the knowledge to better understand the importance of

Historic Preservation Conservation and
improvement of our existing built resources - buildings, neighborhoods,
downtowns, and infrastructure - are environmentally logical, economically
viable, and socially rational elements in promoting sustainable stewardship.
Come learn about the Sustainability Initiative of the National Trust
for Historic Preservation and how reusing, reinvesting and retrofitting
buildings in your community can provide guiding principles to sustainable
development.

"Breaking a 50 Year Impasse: The Cathedral Area Historic District Improvements"
Bob
Shannon was the Project Manager for Bismarck's Cathedral Area Historic District
Streetscape project, where the community succeeded in breaking a 50 year
impasse regarding Washington Street improvements.
Bob was born and raised in Bismarck, where he frequently made the pilgrimage
up and down Washington Street to the Dairy Queen and Elks Pool. He holds
a Civil Engineering degree from NDSU and is a registered professional engineer
in 5 states. Bob has over 25 years experience with transportation projects,
including 11 years at NDDOT where his last position was the Urban Planning
Engineer, and 15 years as a transportation planning consultant for Kadrmas,
Lee & Jackson, Inc. in Bismarck. In his career he has participated in
over 200 public input meetings in over 25 communities. He considers himself
a "non-traditional" engineer by focusing on the human and environmental
context of engineering projects.

Meet Preservation North Dakota's
affiliates from across the state. Take part in a discussion on current preservation
issues, hear success stories, share ideas and solve problems. PND Affiliate
Coordinator Marilu Person and Jen Wilkie, PND Development Coordinator. Marilu
is an agricultural consultant who volunteers as curator of Traill County
Historical Society's museums in Hillsboro and is on their Board of Directors.
Jen Wilkie is PND's Development Director and a Master's Candidate at North
Dakota State University specializing in Great Plains Regional and Public
History.

"Architectural Expression and Cultural Identity: Learning from the Past
to Help Us Make Better Decisions for the Future"
Through the historical
period the Mandan Hidatsa and Arikara people have used a variety of technical
building practices that were well-suited to their specific environmental
context. Marita Abe explores ways to express cultural identity, past traditional
building ideas and place making practices in current architectural expression.

until 2:45, when it will be time to board the waiting motor coach at the
Visitors Center.

Motor coach tour of the Double Ditch archeological site and Knife River
Indian Villages. National Historic Site. We continue our exploration of Mandan
Hidatsa and Arikara architectural development over the years. Tour leader
is Fern Swenson, Archaeology and Historic Preservation Division Director,
and Staff of the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site.
6:00 – 7:30 pm
Dinner at the Stanton Civic Center
"Native Perspectives on Knife River Indian Villages National Historic
Site" With thirty years of professional experience in communications,
public relations and cultural preservation, Calvin Grinnell will speak on
his personal experiences at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic
Site, which instilled in him a lifelong interest in tribal history. He will
touch upon native spirituality and its significance to the area in a compelling
PowerPoint presentation. He assisted in the construction of the present earth
lodge at Knife River and has researched earth lodge construction at various
times in his career. He assists Elgin Crows Breast, Cultural Preservation
Officer for the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation, as a tribal historian and
computer applications specialist.

Motor Coach returns to Buckstop Junction.
