"Highland Acres: Post War Planning and Results"
The Great Depression
and then World War II kept families from building new homes for about 15
years. Once the war was over and the men and women returned home from service,
however, the shortage of housing became a focus of many communities. The
Bismarck Veteran's Homeowner's Cooperative Association formed with the idea
of creating a peaceful community for veterans while saving money by buying
materials and building in mass. Hear the story of this group and the formation
of Highland Acres. Lorna Meidinger grew up in western and central North Dakota
and got her Bachelor's degree in Public History from North Dakota State University
in 2004. After working for the National Park Service a few seasons and then
joining the National Guard, she went on to earn a Master's degree in Historic
Preservation from Colorado State University in 2008. After graduation, the
Bismarck native returned home to become the Architectural Historian for the
State Historical Society of North Dakota. (SHS ND).

Gary Petri Debunking the myths that new windows are cheaper and more
energy-efficient than old.

are usually better than new replacements in terms of dollars spent, energy
efficiency, and making the "greenest" choice. Please note that
the SHS of ND scheduled a follow up windows workshop on how to repair wood
sashes. Saturday May 9th 2-5 pm at SHS ND, North Dakota Heritage Cente
