First Lady To Visit Historic North Dakota Church
A little North Dakota church is preparing for a very well-known visitor this week. First Lady Laura Bush will be in North Dakota on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the Sims Scandinavian Lutheran Church and Parsonage. She will participate in a small group tour, hear about the community and building history, its restoration, and the ghost stories of the Gray Lady ghost who inhabits the building. This event is open to the press and local guests by invitation only. (more)

New Tax Credits for Charitable Donations
I am very excited about new legislation signed recently by Governor Hoeven, making North Dakota one of only five states to offer residents tax breaks for supporting nonprofit organizations. I am hoping the information from this report, combined with the new tax breaks, will encourage residents to contribute money in addition to volunteer time and expertise to North Dakota’s many small nonprofit organizations. PND Announces New Volunteer Session at Hutmacher Farm
The Hutmacher farm is a one-of-a-kind treasure of immigrant architecture and time capsule of the history of one of the last settlement periods in North Dakota’s history. The site was in many ways ahead of its time, in terms of conservation, green-architecture and eco-friendly construction techniques. It now needs your help to stabilize it and secure its prominence in sharing a story with those who haven’t yet discovered it. (more)

Rural church receives preservation grant
Dale Bentley, executive director of Preservation North Dakota, announced Tuesday, August 7 that the St. Clement Church in Haymarsh had been awarded a $5,000 matching grant toward a proposed exterior project, in part thanks to the J. M. Kaplan Foundation. (more)

International Garden begins journey back
North Dakota lawmakers this year doubled the amount of operating money for the garden and provided funds not only for long-overdue repairs, but for expansion as well. Preservation North Dakota listed the building first on its list this year of the most endangered historic properties in the state. (more)
