2008 Rurik Ekstrom Historic Preservation Scholarship Recipient
The 2008 scholarship recipient is Marita Abe, architecture
major at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. Abe has been described as a dedicated,
hardworking student who has a very mature understanding of an architect’s
professional responsibilities. She is particularly interested in historic
preservation issues. “I… have taken an interest in focusing
my projects towards educating myself in issues of historic preservation. I
feel very lucky to be able to present my projects to my peers to help make
the issues aware to them as well. It is a gift I would like to give
back to my family and friends who have supported me throughout my education
and research opportunities here at NDSU,” Abe said.
Abe has also recently been named a research scholar in
the Rodney McNair scholars program, which includes an 18-month research project. Abe’s
project is titled “Architectural Expression, Heritage Landscapes, and
Cultural Identities: Celebrating North Dakota’s Three Affiliated Tribes.”
