Union Block
The Union Block is a venerable landmark in the heart of downtown Hillsboro, North Dakota that stands as a testament to 19th century civic cooperation. After fire destroyed a block of wood-frame businesses, pioneer merchants united to build this two-story brick structure in 1891-1892. Union Block was built from the plans of Architect Fisk of Grand Forks, North Dakota in the Early Commercial Style with Romanesque influences in the arches above the windows.
The two south buildings are owned by Hillsboro Community Partership, a PND Local Affiliate. Both of these properties had been in disrepair and deteriorating condition from leaking roofs. Repairs on these buildings have allowed the 2006 reoccupation of the ground floor by two new businesses.
This Prairie Places Grassroots Grant assisted with the replacement of main floor joists and decking and as well as rear wall masonry work.
